Fish Creek Watershed Weed Project

Leafy spurge and spotted knapweed are being tackled through this project in the Fish Creek Watershed.  Landowners can work with the Jefferson County Weed District to develop and implement a weed management plan.   A 50% cost share is available for weed control.  Interested landowners may contact Jefferson County Weed Coordinator Sam Little in Boulder at 225-4165.

More than 9500 acres belonging to 21 landowners have been surveyed.  Several landowners have treated their weeds.

This is a cooperative project involving the Jefferson County Weed District, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the JRWC and local residents.  It involves a comprehensive approach to mapping and controlling weeds using various weed management methods, including herbicides and biological controls. The 3-year project is funded by a $100,400 grant from the NRCS.

Conifer Encroachment Study

The Riparian/Forestry Sub-committee of the Council is working with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Montana State University (MSU) to study the effects of juniper removal on riparian health and stream flow.  A joint research project with the BLM and MSU is underway in the Whitetail Creek drainge.  Junipers are being reduced using prescribed fire and mechanical means to determine the effect on groundwater and stream flows.
